With the cooler weather upon us I crave a warm bowl of porridge for breakfast. This recipe has evolved from my interest in Ayurvedic principles so incorporates a small spoonful of ghee for it’s nourishing quality along with my favourite warming spices, cinnamon and ginger to ward off the morning chill. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do. It is a fantastic way to start your day.
This recipe serves 1 but feel free to multiply the quantities depending on how many hungry mouths you have to feed.

Winter Porridge
With the cooler weather upon us, I crave a warm bowl of porridge for breakfast. This recipe has evolved from my interest in Ayurvedic principles, so it incorporates a small spoonful of ghee for its nourishing quality along with my favourite warming spices, cinnamon and ginger, to ward off the morning chill. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do. It is a fantastic way to start your day.
Ingredients
- ⅓ cup rolled oats
- 1 tsp ghee
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon
- ⅛ tsp ground ginger
- ⅔ cup boiling water
- pinch of salt
- ⅓ cup milk
- 1 tbsp sultanas
To serve
- extra milk
- sweetener your choice eg. honey or sugar
Instructions
- Place the oats, ghee and spices in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook gently for a few minutes until the oats are toasted and coated in the ghee.
- Next, add the boiling water, salt, milk and sultanas and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for about 7 minutes, stirring regularly, or until oats have softened and porridge is creamy.
- Spoon into your favourite bowl, sprinkle with a little sugar or drizzle with honey, and serve with milk. Sit in the morning sunshine and enjoy!
